After hotel and cruise ship dock pick-ups, guests are collected along the west coast of Antigua by boat and taken into the Northeast Marine Management Area, the Eastern Caribbean's biggest Marine park. There are over two dozen little islands and cays nestled between wonderful reefs which all create a barrier to the Atlantic Ocean's waves and swells.

After zigging and zagging between these beautiful areas over the azure waters, the team navigates guests over to the private Laviscount Island to be greeted by wonderful hosts. Laviscount is a gem of natural wonder and historical significance which has been carefully and expertly prepared to host adventurers. The wooden docking area alone will captivate you as shoals of fish swim by. Laviscount is fringed by the most beautiful red mangrove plants and upon arrival you know that you're in for a treat. After the hosts give a short briefing, you will visit the giant Aldabra tortoises. Words just won't do the experience justice but suffice to say that this will be a vacation highlight! You will have almost 3 hours on this island and unfortunately the guides are pretty sure you'll find it won’t be long enough. With this in mind, the group won't take forever having lunch up under the wooden pavillion - despite the lunch being another highlight. Next, your guides and hosts will show you the Lesser Antillean iguana which is a very rare and fascinating native species to this part of the Caribbean. The macaw parrots will say hello as you explore.

From here, you take a short hike through the middle of the island where artifacts from an ancient Amerindian settlement can be found (and must be turned over to the guides, of course). Learn some fantastic history about some of the region's original inhabitants and how important these offshore islands were to their survival. After a little walk to the most windward-facing bluff with its astonishing vistas of Seaton's Harbour, you will have a choice to snorkel along the mangroves or return to spend a little more time with the giant tortoises.

Then it's time to say goodbye to the captivating Laviscount Island and to cruise over to Hell's Gate. Since 1999 your guides have been taking their guests here to explore the amazing rocky bridge, limestone caves and natural jacuzzi. Yet another vacation highlight!

It’s hard to believe that there's more time for more adventure, but you really should do some guided snorkeling through the coral reefs before cruising home and opening up the historically important and equally potent traditional rum punch. It'll be a contemplative ride back to your hotel.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to know how to swim? -- Most certainly not. Non-swimmers are welcome and swimming proficiency has never been a prerequisite on these excursions. Of course, you don’t have to go swimming/snorkeling, but some non-swimmers want to go so bad that, after a snorkeling lesson, they just put on provided flotation vests and get pulled around the reef by one of the snorkeling guides.

What is included? -- Laviscount entry fee, snorkeling gear, a buffet lunch (including options for those with dietary restrictions) and a rum punch at the end of the tour. All you have to bring is a towel, sunscreen, swimsuit, camera, hat (if you want) and shoes you don't mind getting wet. Those plastic waterproof cameras are great, too. Another good thing to bring is a pair of polarized sunglasses. They'll help you spot turtles and rays.

What is for lunch? -- There will be a buffet that will include at least pasta salad with Parmesan cheese, BBQ chicken, green salad, fried plantain and banana bread for dessert.

How much snorkeling do we do? -- You will have the opportunity to snorkel several times on this tour. The first is off the beach, and this is where there will be in-depth snorkeling lessons for people who haven’t done it before or those who want a refresher course. Then you'll have the choice of snorkeling again after lunch at Hell’s Gate Island and one last time off Welch Rock before the trip home.

What type of wildlife may we see? -- Different animals are spotted throughout the year. In the winter months from the end of January until April, you may see the massive humpback whales occasionally as they pass through the islands on their way North. Nine out of ten trips you will see either Hawksbill or Green turtles from the boat as they come up for air in the North Sound. Several species of lizard daily, the rarest snake in the world (totally harmless) shows itself occasionally, hermit crabs, many species of fish, birds, both migratory and indigenous, star fish, crabs, lobster, rays. occasional dolphins and there is always the crew!

Are there sharks in Antigua? -- Yes, just like most of the world's oceans. But, you are more likely to see whales, dolphins and turtles than a single shark...and if you see one, it will be gone in a flash.

How fit do I need to be? How difficult are the ladders? -- All levels of fitness are welcome. There is some hiking and caving, but whenever there is a challenge you don't wish to take, there are always other options. The tour is an active one and like all boating tours, you have to get off the boat by ladder to get to the beach or go snorkeling. People have handled the ladder on and off the boat with arms in casts and people have arrived on crutches and gone up and down as well. All sizes and shapes of guests have been up and down them. If you go slowly, then the ladders are very simple. The crew will be helping as well.
